HISTORY

Safranbolu Fethi Toker Faculty of Fine Arts and Design was founded on May 30, 2002 and linked to Karabuk University, which was established newly, on May 29, 2007. In our faculty, there are recently four departments: Architecture, Painting, Music and Industrial Design. Basic values of our faculty are being scientific, universal, rational, sensivitiveness to ethic and esthetic problems, creativity, awarenesss of responsibility, sharing and participation.
The Faculty Building is registered as a protected architectural monument by the Ministry of Culture. It was built by Abdurrahman Pasha on the order of Sultan Abdülhamit the Second as a hospital in 1890 written in the marble epitaph at the entrance. Known as 93 war (1877-1878 )(Gregorian calendar 1293) after Ottoman-Russian war it is considered that Syphillus is spread by sailors coming to region and after that it become wide spread. With command of, Governer of Kastamonu made it built. Began in 1885 the building completed in 1890 and given the name "Syphilis and Forlorn Hospital" and opened in order to render service.
Done entirely cut stone, palace type and with the technique of built of bricks stone. This double building is situated on a hill in the region of Kıranköy having Panorama of Safranbolu. From between flowers, pine trees, linden trees tracking ways healing effect, curative Botanic garden with characteristic of " visage" The appearance is almost wholly changed around it afterwards. With the help of the hospital, which is built in the garden, began public serving in 1975. The building served various functions. For a time it fell into disuse. In 1990, it was restored by the Ministry of Health with the intention of making it into a medical school. Now it serves as the "Fethi Toker Fine Arts and Design Faculty" building. Above the entrance gate to the building there is an epitaph to Sultan Gazi II Abdulhamit Khan. The stone work was done by Greek stone masons living in Safranbolu where as wooden parts were done by Turkish craftsmen from Bulak village.  The stones used for building were brought from Karıt. 
Partially destroyed, on the marble epitaph on the entrance gate had six lines as below: "This Building in the honour of Sultan Gazi II Abdülhamit Khan who has grandeur and mighty ;establisher of many beneficial institution and science schools and doer of well deeds, by one of ex-governer worthy of him majesty Abdurrahman Pasha during his devoir, it is built and opened. Year 1306"
Apart from the historical building, there is the "Göztepe Fine Arts and Education Complex" built by IMKB ( Istanbul Stock Exchange) in Göztepe in 2002. This complex is comprised of six blocks. Some of it is assigned to the faculty. There are administrative offices, a concert hall, painting, sculpture and ceramic studios, a computer laboratory, multi-aimed classrooms, staff rooms, a library, a food centre, open sport complex. Addition to historical building, education is also carried out in Göztepe Education Complex.
